Seasons of the Spirit: Daily Meditations for Adults in Mid-Life and Beyond

Best Meditations for Those Over 40 (and anyone else)
Of the many inspirational books devoted to daily meditations, this is the best. The tone is philosophical rather than didactic. There's few compilations this lovely--none as helpful. This is NOT a 12-step book; it is most helpful, as the title suggests, for those 40 and over. I am 58.

TRICKS OF LIGHT
Wow! Finally, a good fiction yarn set in Western Washington. After receiving an advance copy from the author, I opened this book and could not put it down until the end, and even then wished there was more. There is something for everyone in this book, including memorable scenes of a man so obsessed with the tomatoes in his garden that he can't grasp what's happening around him, a rogue military colonel who takes matters into his hand and defies the U.S. military, hints of a multi-national U.N. coalition, and enough references to 9/11 and Operation Enduring Freedom to make this book very relevant ... and frighteningly possible. And how many times have you thought you've seen something from the corner of your eye, only to turn and look and see nothing there? After reading this book, you'll have to wonder about all those times, and you'll remember it the next time that happens. A great read!

Shadows in My Hands: A Southwestern Odyssey
Published in Hardcover by Swallow Pr (October, 1993)
Author: Jane Candia Coleman
Average review score:

A Precious Tome
I stumbled across this book in the tiny library in Casa Grande, Arizona, during one of the roughest times in my life. Ms. Coleman's strength, vibrant images of the Southwest, and willingness to get out there and struggle to find a new self, were so inspiring and comforting for me.

This should be a "coming of age book" for every woman in that spectacular time in her life. It also needs to be shared with daughters.

I was working on the Pima Reservation at the time, and the author's descriptions of the mountains and the majestic landscape truly captured the stark beauty that is so captivating. One gentleman I worked with was disabled, but even with the intellect of a seven year old he could, with a box of crayons, reproduce the deep shadows and myriad colors that she so lovingly painted with words.

The book is a very quick read, but definitely a "keeper."

Stranglehold - Captures the reader and doesn't let go!
Out of print, but worth the effort to search and devour. This is one of the most compelling reads I've had in a long time. Contemporary fiction should pause a moment to observe how action, suspense, mystery and intrigue can be cleverly woven into such a tight fabric of a novel.

I suggest that every student of good American literature seek out this author and particularly this novel. I expect to see a struggle in Hollywood over the movie rights Stranglehold - the Movie.

They Don't Play Stickball in Milwaukee
Published in Hardcover by Permanent Press (December, 1997)
Author: Reed Farrel Coleman
Average review score:

A great read!
I loved this book; I couldn't put it down! Both my husband and I read it in one sitting. The plot was compelling, a real roller coaster ride with lots of complications and surprises. The characters were real and likable. I particularly liked the interactions between Klein and MacClough, and the bedroom scenes with Kira were...umm...attention getting! I was moved to tears at several different points, and laughed aloud at others. Coleman writes in a style reminiscent of Lawrence Block, with some Chandler and Hammett thrown in for good measure. Great dialogue, too! Check it out!!

To Be a Drum
Published in School & Library Binding by Albert Whitman & Co (February, 1998)
Authors: Evelyn Coleman, Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson, and Kathy Tucker
Average review score:

Not to Be Missed!!
This book is nothing short of an affirmation of life, celebrating the creativity and perseverance of the human spirit. In deceptively simple text, which even the youngest child can appreciate, Coleman weaves a story of tradition which, down through time, continues to bind people together in a delightful kaleidoscope of change. Complementing the simple text are Aminah Robinson's mixed-media illustrations, incorporating earth from Africa with material from her grandmother's quilt. Stitches running through the pages neatly reinforce the theme of the story. A book not to be missed.

Today I feel like a warm fuzzy
I read this book to my own kids when they were very young, and my older daughter kept reading it as one of her favorites. They are now 23 and 25. Now I have a one year old grandson and pulled this book out again to put in the bookcase. Great book on expression of feelings in appropriate ways with Bible scripture given.
